Dr. Priyanka Upadhyaya, Psy.D

I am a clinical psychologist licensed in New Jersey and New York with a passion for helping people create and live their best life. I came to the US as a student soon after the 9/11 attacks and spent the next 5 years in graduate school at Rutgers University specializing in the treatment of Depression, Anxiety, Trauma and chronic stress. My clinical style evolved from being primarily psycho-dynamic at the time, to a more integrative orientation today. In all the positions I held after graduating from my doctoral program at the Graduate school of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) Rutgers University, my mission has been to focus on the whole person health and happiness. This evolution in my practice came from a pursuit of yogic breathing practices and mindfulness mediation over the past 11 years. They truly have changed the way I practice and live.
For the past 10 years, I have partnered with individuals, groups and families of various cultural, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, through psychotherapy and coaching. My expertise lies in helping people transform chronic stress, depression and anxiety into opportunities for creating a thriving life.
My clients have benefitted by applying skills rooted in the science of change and personal growth to free themselves from the shackles of their symptoms and craft a great quality of life with fulfilling relationships and thriving health.
I use evidence based treatments (CBT, DBT, Mindfulness techniques, Psychodynamic therapy to name a few), well known for symptom relief, restoring a sense of wellbeing and reducing overall stress. To learn more about some of the key therapeutic modalities I integrate in my work, visit me at www.thrivewm.net.
I also hold a faculty position at the NYU Langone Medical Center (NYULMC) where I practice psychotherapy and coaching with clients through a health program for survivors of the 9/11 attacks.
In addition to clinical practice I provide clinical leadership through supervision and mentoring of early career mental health professionals. As one of the few proponents of mindfulness in mental health treatment and wellness, I lead the Trauma informed training program through a prestigious internship program for doctoral level psychology students.
One of the key areas I integrate my passion for whole person health is in employee and workplace health. I lead in house training, workshops, webinars and “ask the expert” presentations on a variety of topics that include: managing stress, depression, anxiety and fostering wellbeing through the use of mind-body techniques, specifically mindfulness approaches. My audiences have been NYULMC staff and employees of corporations in NYC.
I have also collaborated with the CDC and various community partners through social media campaigns for members of the World Trade Center Health Program. For the past three years I have been a speaker and panelist the VOICES of September 11th Resiliency symposium as an expert on providing clinical care to those with depression, anxiety and PTSD.
I was also recently featured on Dr. Radio, a NYU Langone Medical Center radio show focused on managing stress and healthy coping.
My passion for health, wellness, healing from chronic stress and burnout also has culminated in addressing the growing problems that teens and their families face today. I have presented across various school districts in northern NJ on mindful parenting, teen stress and life transitions.
